10-7-07 Radio show - It’s time to finish the Bears! Why? Brett Favre 22-8 all time vs da bears
Current mood: excited
Category: Sports

Hey Cheeseheads,

It is almost time to finish off the Bears! Favre has owned the team from the south for his whole career. But this should be a real good game. The boys from Chi-town are in real trouble and have to beat the Pack.

There are many cool web sites on the nfl's all time greatest team rivalry. I have listed a couple of them for you to check out before the big game. Here is the link to all the info on the Packer vs. Bears series & the game at Lambeau.

Thanks to my Mother who bought my Father Green Bay Packers season tickets for their 1st year wedding anniversary back in 1957 I have been lucky to be at many of the great Packer vs. Bears games at Lambeau field. Here are some of my memories from the games. That's if I can remember --> --> --> --> --> --> --> --> --> --> --> -->. My first Packer game was in 1970 (NY Giants) and I can still see Bart Starr throwing a TD to Carrol Dale. Lets' tap in to Tommy's old memory banks.

Packer vs. Bears by decades:

1970's

- Walter Payton run all over the Pack to many times for my taste. Neither team was really any good but it was always a fun game. Packers had running back John Brockington and only one playoff year in 1972. Bart Starr was named coach in 1975 and gave us Packer fans hope with the saying. " Fresh Start with Bart" I still have the bummer sticker!

1980's

- Things started to get better in GB in the early eighties. I was in high school at the time and I guess I was what you would say "wild & crazy" during the games. I didn't get along at all with the Bear fans at Lambeau. I would tell them sit down and shout up. This is our house!! I was not very nice to them sorry........ But not really!!

1980 home game – My sister (Barb) and brother-law (Dave) were at this one.
-Packers 12, Bears 6 (OT) (September 7, 1980) Chester Marcol may best be known for his game winning touchdown against the Chicago Bears in 1980. In the first week of the 1980 NFL season the Packers were tied with the Bears 6-6 in overtime. A 32-yard pass from Lynn Dickey to James Lofton helped set up a 34-yard attempt to win the game for the Packers. Marcol's kick was blocked and came straight back to his facemask. He caught the ball and ran around the startled Bears in what appeared to be sheer fright. Marcol was able to run 25 yards into the end-zone to give the Packers a 12-6 victory.[2]

Watched this one on TV. Not sure who in the family were at the game.

-Bears 12, Packers 10 (November 23, 1986) – In Week 12 of the 1986 season Green Bay defensive tackle Charles Martin wore a towel with a hit list of specific Bears numbers written on it, such as 34, Walter Payton, 9 Jim McMahon, and others. Following a McMahon interception Martin came up from behind and body slammed him to the turf, separating McMahon's shoulder, ending the quarterback's season. Martin would be suspended for two games, at the time the longest suspension in NFL history.

I was at this game with my brother (Mark), Father and brother-in law(Dave) To me besides the Championship game in 1997(Carolina Panthers) it was the greatest game I ever saw at Lambeau. Our seats(1-4) are in the 11 row on the Packer side of the field in the corner of the south endzone(Ice Bowl) and this game winning play was right in front of me. Going in to the game Ditka and Bears beat us 8 games in a row. I sat through 4 years of us losing to the bears at home. It was always a long ride back to the Milwaukee area. I hated those rides. But this time it was unreal. After Sharpe caught the TD from Magic Man we were going crazy. When the referee called the penalty I fell right on the ground in pain saying NO!! Other fans at the game had TV's in the stands and we all huddles together to watch the replay and we still had hope. When the ref said " we have a reversal it's a TD" it was the greatest words I ever heard to this day! Besides "ladies & gentleman THE WHO"

-Packers 14, Bears 13 (November 5, 1989) – Packers quarterback Don Majkowski led the Packers to a comeback and a game-winning touchdown pass to WR Sterling Sharpe with only seconds left to play. Initially the play was called a touchdown, but line judge Jim Quirk had called a penalty on Majkowski for being beyond the line of scrimmage when he threw the pass. With a nervous and tense crowd at Lambeau Field, the call went up to the instant replay official, Bill Parkinson. Several minutes later the call came down and the touchdown was correctly awarded as recorded by instant replay. The Lambeau faithful and Packer players erupted with joy because it marked the first time since 1984 that the Packers had beaten their long-time rivals. The game has been called "The Instant Replay Game" by many fans. Contrary to what many fans still believe, Bears head coach Mike Ditka was never angry that the call was reversed. He never claimed the officials made the wrong call. What angered Ditka was that the replay officials took more than four minutes to make the call, when they were supposed to take no more than two. Ditka was so incensed that he insisted that the Bears put an asterisk next to this game in the Bears media guide. That asterisk still exists to this day.
